I make work about a sense of fear and abandonment, entrapment and the sublime in nature, particularly using imagery of waterfalls and the empty swimming pool as metaphors. I am interested in the discomfort of the perspective, whether it is looking down into water or across from the bottom of an empty pool, and the discomfort in perspective shifts from ground to sky. With a variance in mark and visual spatial relations, I look to blur the line between a photographic-inspired image and the physicality of marked and painted surfaces.
I work in both small and large scales. In the small works there is an intimacy and paradox of the grand contained in the miniature. The large drawings have more room for multiple vistas and an approachable human perspective. In the large graphite drawings and paint collages of empty pool spaces, there is a sense of entrapment and morose ambiguity, which heightens the viewers awareness and presence of space. I am looking to pursue a contemporary view of landscape and the sublime among the turmoil of the current culture.
